The 5-Minute Marketing Course Lesson 4 of 7
Same name, address and phone everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number show up in dozens of places online: your website, Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories, and old listings you've forgotten about.
Marketers call this your "NAP." When those details don't match, two things go wrong:
- Customers get the wrong number or address. An old phone number on a forgotten listing is a customer calling someone else.
- Search engines get less sure about you. Google says its local results weigh how well-known a business is across the web (Google: how local results are ranked). Consistent details make you easier to trust and to find.
Step 1: Pick your official version
Write it down once, exactly, and use it everywhere:
- Name: your real business name, with no keywords added. "Smith Plumbing," not "Smith Plumbing Best Plumber in Town."
- Address: pick one format and stick to it ("Suite 4" or "#4," not both). If you work from home and serve customers at their location, you can usually hide your address and show a service area instead.
- Phone: one main number, ideally a local one.
Step 2: Check the big five
Search for your business on Google Maps, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp and Facebook. For each one, check the name, address, phone, website link and hours. Fix what you can, and claim any listing you don't control yet.
Step 3: Hunt down the old stuff
Search your old phone number and old address in quotes. Anything that comes up is still sending people to the wrong place.
